Saudi Arabia's electric vehicle industry is poised for growth, driven by community interest and government support.
Saudi Arabia is on the brink of a significant transformation in its electric vehicle (EV) industry. This shift is not just a trend; it is a crucial part of the Kingdom's vision for a sustainable future. During a recent panel discussion at the EV Auto Show in Riyadh, top executives shared their insights on how the local community is embracing this change. The event, held on September 18, focused on the evolving landscape of electric charging in Saudi Arabia.
Ali Ghnaim, the CEO of Gasable, highlighted the growing interest in electric vehicles among the Saudi population. He stated, "We find that the willingness to have an electric vehicle in Saudi Arabia is around 60 percent. Following our audience, this is a very great percentage." This statistic reflects a positive trend, indicating that many people are open to adopting EVs as part of their daily lives.
Collaboration is key to the success of the EV market, as emphasized by Mohammed Al-Musawa, head of ASX E-Mobility. He explained, "The goal of this market is the dealership, and then we complement the dealership with the charging infrastructure." This means that dealerships and charging stations must work together to provide a seamless experience for customers. Al-Musawa also pointed out the Saudi government's proactive approach, stating, "From what I’ve seen, the push from the government, the money that is already on the table, indicates that there will be a future for EVs." This government support is crucial for building the necessary infrastructure to support electric vehicles.
Rohit Ramesh, a manager at CITA EV, brought attention to two major projects in the Kingdom: NEOM and The Red Sea. These projects are not just ambitious; they are essential for the growth of the EV sector. Ramesh noted, "The newer infrastructures, the new constructions that we are expecting from NEOM and Red Sea, all these sites already have these EV charger infrastructures in the development phase itself." This means that as these projects progress, they will include the necessary charging stations to support electric vehicles.
In 2023, The Red Sea project made headlines by developing the largest off-grid EV charging network in Saudi Arabia, with over 150 terminals installed to power 80 guest transport vehicles. NEOM is also committed to zero-carbon goals, which include implementing shared autonomous and electric shuttles. These initiatives will not only enhance urban mobility but also contribute to a cleaner environment.
The panel discussion concluded with optimistic predictions for the future of the EV sector in Saudi Arabia. Ramesh remarked, "By 2030, the vision of Saudi Arabia would be seeing several charging stations across the country, making it more seamless to travel within the region, and more electric vehicles will be coming into the market as well." This vision paints a picture of a future where electric vehicles are a common sight on the roads, supported by a robust network of charging stations.
The electric vehicle industry in Saudi Arabia is set for remarkable growth, driven by community interest, government support, and innovative projects. As the Kingdom moves towards a more sustainable future, the collaboration between dealerships, charging infrastructure, and government initiatives will play a vital role in making electric vehicles a mainstream choice for the people. The journey towards a greener tomorrow is underway, and it promises to be an exciting ride for everyone involved.
