The Taliban government's stance on women's rights and their exclusion from UN talks in Qatar raise concerns. Focus on economic development crucial for Afghanistan's stability.

The Taliban government in Afghanistan has reiterated its position on women's rights, asserting that these issues are internal matters that should be resolved within the country. This statement comes as the United Nations prepares for talks in Qatar, where the absence of Afghan women from the main discussions has sparked concerns.

Since assuming power in 2021, the Taliban has faced criticism for imposing strict restrictions on women. While civil society representatives, including women's rights groups, will participate in separate meetings during the UN-led talks, the exclusion of Afghan women from the primary negotiations has drawn backlash.

Government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid emphasized that the Taliban acknowledges women's issues but believes they should be addressed internally to avoid further conflict. The Taliban delegation aims to represent the entire Afghan population at the talks and asserts their role as the sole Afghan representatives.

The UN-initiated talks, launched in 2023, aim to strengthen international cooperation with the Taliban government, which remains unrecognized by any state. Women's rights have been a contentious topic in engaging with the new Afghan leadership.

On the agenda for the upcoming discussions are talks on combating narcotics and addressing economic challenges, crucial issues for the impoverished nation. Mujahid stressed the significance of economic development in resolving various problems, underscoring the need to eliminate barriers hindering progress.

The Taliban's stance on women's rights and their participation in the UN talks reflect ongoing debates surrounding gender equality and international engagement with the Afghan government. As discussions continue, the focus on economic development and addressing societal challenges remains paramount for the future stability of Afghanistan.
