Five die from heatstroke during Indian Air Force event in Chennai, raising concerns over crowd management and safety measures.
In a tragic incident during an Indian Air Force event in Chennai, at least five individuals lost their lives due to suspected heat stroke. This event, which celebrated the air force's 92nd anniversary, attracted a staggering crowd of approximately 1.5 million people. The air show took place at the famous Marina Beach, one of the longest beaches in the world, on a day when temperatures soared to 35°C (95°F), as reported by the weather department.
Chandramohan, a software engineer who attended the event, expressed his concerns about the lack of water supply amidst the 'hot and humid' conditions. He noted that many attendees were seen fainting due to the extreme heat and dehydration. 'Worst was the exit after the event. Roads were choked...Buses got stuck too,' he recounted, highlighting the chaos that ensued as people tried to leave the venue.
M K Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, acknowledged the unfortunate deaths, attributing them to 'extreme heat and various medical reasons.' He mentioned that while efforts were made to manage the crowd, the turnout exceeded expectations, leading to unforeseen challenges. 'Next time such big events are organised, more attention and arrangements will be made,' he assured in a statement.
In response to the situation, Ma Subramanian, the state minister for medical and family welfare, stated that the government had deployed medical teams, security personnel, temporary toilets, and drinking water supplies for the event. However, the immediate response from officials of the air force regarding the incident was not available.
This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adequate planning and resources during large gatherings, especially in extreme weather conditions. It is crucial for event organizers to prioritize the health and safety of attendees, ensuring that necessary provisions are in place to prevent such tragedies in the future. As we reflect on this incident, it becomes evident that while celebrations are important, the well-being of individuals must always come first.
