UN Procurement Seminar Launches in Ningbo, China

The United Nations (UN) has made a significant move by holding its International Procurement Seminar (IPS) in Asia for the first time, specifically in the city of Ningbo, China. Traditionally, the IPS has been held in Europe three times a year, but the UN's shift towards Asia indicates a desire to innovate and adapt its procurement methods.

The country offers high-quality products and services at competitive prices, which can significantly enhance the efficiency of UN funding. An official from the Ministry of Commerce's Department of International Trade and Economic Relations stated, "By increasing its procurement of Chinese goods, the UN can allow more developing countries to benefit from UN development aid projects. This aligns with our mutual interests." This perspective underscores the potential benefits of collaboration between the UN and Chinese enterprises.

Ningbo has been proactive in promoting UN procurement, organizing various initiatives to engage local businesses. Last September, the city hosted the China (Ningbo) UN Procurement Promotion Conference, which successfully helped nearly 110 companies register on the official United Nations Global Marketplace (UNGM) website. The UNDP office in China expressed appreciation for Ningbo's vibrant manufacturing and foreign trade sectors, recognizing their potential to provide innovative solutions for UN procurement.

Neris M. Baez, Director of the UN Secretariat Procurement Division, remarked, "Ningbo serves as both a catalyst and a bridge, linking China with the world and the UN." This statement reflects the city's strategic role in facilitating international trade and cooperation.

The UN procurement system offers several advantages, such as duty exemptions, low exchange rate risks, and market stability. These factors can help open markets in countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, creating potential benefits and spillover effects. A representative from the Ningbo Committee of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade emphasized the importance of connecting with international high standards, stating, "The key to expanding institutional openness lies in mastering international high-standard trade regulations."
