Worldcoin Rebrands to World Network, Launches Iris-Scanning Initiative

Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency initiative spearheaded by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has recently announced a significant rebranding to World Network. This change comes alongside an ambitious plan to scan the irises of every human being using its innovative "orb" devices. The primary offering of this project is the World ID, which the company describes as a "digital passport" that verifies the holder's humanity, distinguishing them from AI chatbots that are increasingly prevalent online.

At an event held in San Francisco, World Network unveiled a new version of its orb iris-scanning device. This updated orb boasts 5G connectivity and enhanced privacy and security features, addressing some of the concerns raised by privacy advocates. The company is also introducing various methods to facilitate access to the orb, including dedicated retail locations and a partnership with the Latin American delivery service Rappi, aimed at making the orbs more accessible to the public.

To obtain a World ID, individuals must participate in an in-person iris scan using the orb, which resembles a silver ball about the size of a bowling ball. Once the orb successfully verifies that the individual is indeed a human, it generates a World ID. As an incentive, participants in certain countries are rewarded with a cryptocurrency token known as WLD.

Since its launch in July 2023, World Network has reported that over 6.9 million people have signed up to have their irises scanned. However, the project has not been without controversy. Privacy campaigners have raised alarms regarding the collection, storage, and usage of personal data. Earlier this year, countries such as Spain and Portugal imposed temporary bans on the project, while Argentina and Britain have announced plans to scrutinize World Network's operations.
