Pakistan's mobile market sees a decline in imports, boosting local manufacturing and consumer preference for affordable devices.

The mobile phone market in Pakistan is undergoing a significant transformation as the import of mobile devices has seen a notable decline in the first four months of the fiscal year 2024-25. According to the latest data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), mobile phone imports amounted to $420.799 million from July to October 2024. This figure represents a decrease of 10.46% compared to $469.969 million during the same period last year. This shift indicates a growing preference among consumers for locally manufactured devices, which are becoming increasingly popular.

Interestingly, while the overall trend shows a decline, there was a 5.06% year-on-year increase in mobile phone imports in October 2024, reaching $174.338 million compared to $165.941 million in October 2023. Additionally, mobile imports surged by an impressive 69.89% in October 2024, rising from $102.618 million in September 2024. This spike can largely be attributed to the launch of the iPhone 16, which likely created a temporary surge in demand for imported phones, despite the overall downward trend in imports.

The decline in mobile phone imports aligns with the increasing popularity of “Made in Pakistan” phones. Local manufacturers are successfully capturing market share by providing affordable and feature-rich devices that cater specifically to the needs of Pakistani consumers. This trend is further bolstered by government initiatives aimed at promoting domestic production and reducing reliance on expensive imports.

However, local manufacturers are calling for more favorable tax policies to enhance the production of mobile phones within the country. They believe that with the right support, Pakistan can transition into a net exporter of mobile devices, which would significantly contribute to the country's economy. The potential for growth in this sector is immense, and with continued support from the government and consumers, the dream of a thriving local mobile phone industry could soon become a reality.

The shift towards “Made in Pakistan” phones not only reflects changing consumer preferences but also highlights the potential for local manufacturers to thrive in a competitive market. As the country moves towards reducing its dependency on imports, it is crucial for both the government and consumers to support local production. This not only aids in economic upliftment but also fosters innovation and job creation within the country. The future of mobile phones in Pakistan looks promising, and with continued efforts, it may soon be a leading player in the global mobile market.
