Pakistan's Textile Industry Facing Challenges in Machinery Export

Pakistan's textile industry is currently experiencing a challenging period, with many mills resorting to exporting their used machinery to countries like Afghanistan, Indonesia, and South America. The surplus manufacturing capacity coupled with low demand within the country has compelled millers to seek buyers overseas. While there is some debate surrounding the exact destinations of these machines, reports indicate a significant portion is finding its way to Afghanistan, where it is aiding in the establishment of textile operations.

Contrary to popular belief, Afghanistan is not the sole recipient of Pakistan's used textile machinery. These machines are also being shipped to regions in South and North America, as well as Indonesia. The closure of spinning mills in Pakistan can be attributed to various factors, including high electricity costs, unresolved disputes among textile owners, government policies, and a lack of incentives to sustain operations.

It is disheartening to note that around seventy percent of the used machines in Pakistan's textile sector end up as scrap due to the industry's gradual decline over the past two decades.

The challenges faced by Pakistan's textile industry highlight the need for comprehensive reforms and support from both the government and industry stakeholders. Addressing issues such as high operational costs, internal conflicts, and policy shortcomings is crucial to reviving the sector and preventing further loss of valuable machinery. By fostering a conducive environment for textile production, Pakistan can potentially reclaim its position as a leading player in the global textile market.
