Saudi Arabia Launches Plant Genetic Resources Program

Saudi Arabia is set to enhance its wheat and barley production with the launch of a new program focused on inventorying 903 plant genetic resources from fruit trees. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, aims to document and preserve genetic material crucial for current and future agricultural needs.

The program's three main pillars include inventorying and evaluating local plant varieties, collaborating with international organizations, and implementing a regional breeding strategy. By prioritizing agro-biodiversity, the Kingdom seeks to fortify its food security, agricultural sustainability, and environmental conservation efforts.

As part of the program's commencement, five varieties of wheat have been submitted for registration, with an additional 97 promising strains undergoing evaluation. The identification of genetic resources spans various regions in Saudi Arabia, with a focus on crops like wheat, barley, coffee, and sesame.

The comprehensive genetic fingerprinting being conducted will facilitate the comparison of plant samples at a molecular level, standardize naming conventions for local varieties, and publish findings globally. Additionally, the establishment of a centralized database will streamline data management and enhance research capabilities in the field of genetic resources.
