Japanese automakers Nissan Motor and Honda Motor are considering a strategic partnership to leverage standardized automotive software and work together on electric vehicle charging infrastructure. This initiative aims to reduce costs and strengthen their position in the growing global electric car market.

The two companies are looking into jointly developing a common operating system for vehicle functions to cut down on expenses. They are also exploring collaboration in six key areas to enhance their competitiveness in the electric vehicle industry. This potential partnership could extend to markets in Japan and abroad.

Nissan and Honda, prominent players in the automotive sector, are facing stiff competition in the worldwide electric vehicle market, especially from rivals like Tesla and emerging Chinese and South Korean automakers. The rise of affordable, technology-driven electric vehicles from Chinese brands has impacted their sales, particularly in crucial markets such as China.

Nissan, recognized for its early efforts in mass-market electric vehicles with the launch of the Leaf in 2010, has sold around 50,000 electric vehicles globally in the first five months of this year, accounting for 3.5% of its total global sales. In contrast, Honda sold 3,190 electric vehicles in the initial quarter of 2024, making up 0.3% of its global retail sales during that period.

The potential collaboration between Nissan and Honda signifies a significant step towards cost efficiency and enhanced competitiveness in the electric vehicle market.
