BISP Beneficiaries Set to Reach 10 Million by Year-End

The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has been a crucial lifeline for many families in Pakistan, especially those struggling to make ends meet. As the country grapples with economic challenges, the government has recognized the need to expand this support system. Recently, Rubina Khalid, the Chairperson of BISP, announced that the number of beneficiaries is set to increase from 9.3 million to an impressive 10 million by the end of this year. This increase comes as a result of additional funding provided by the Prime Minister, aimed at alleviating poverty and providing essential support to the most vulnerable segments of society.

During her address to the business community at the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FCCI), Khalid emphasized the importance of the BISP in bridging the gap between income and expenditures for the poorest families. She highlighted that the programme is not just about providing financial assistance; it is also about empowering families to rise above poverty. One of her key initiatives is to promote a skilled development programme under BISP, which aims to equip registered families, particularly girls, with market-driven skills.

Khalid mentioned the previous “Waseela-e-Rozgar Scheme,” which, although promising, did not achieve its full potential. She expressed her intention to revive this scheme, focusing on providing children from registered families with the skills necessary to secure employment or even start their own businesses. This approach not only aims to uplift families but also has the potential to contribute to the economy by creating a skilled workforce that can earn foreign exchange through overseas employment.

Currently, many institutions offer skill training, but Khalid pointed out that these programs often lack focus. The BISP plans to implement targeted training programs to ensure that children receive the skills they need to find respectable jobs without unnecessary hurdles. This targeted approach is expected to yield better results and provide a clearer pathway out of poverty for many families.

In response to concerns regarding the disbursement of financial assistance, Khalid acknowledged that the current system, which relies on only two banks, has created challenges for beneficiaries. To address this issue, BISP is considering authorizing six additional banks to facilitate smoother transactions. Furthermore, the programme aims to streamline the process by transferring approved stipends directly into beneficiaries' bank accounts, minimizing human intervention.

For those looking to apply for assistance, Khalid clarified that new applications are being accepted, provided that applicants submit their CNIC, “B” Form, and an electricity bill. This requirement ensures that the programme reaches those who genuinely need support.

The expansion of the Benazir Income Support Programme is a significant step towards combating poverty in Pakistan.
