The Central Moon Sighting Committee in Pakistan prepares to sight the Muharram crescent, signaling the start of the Islamic new year. Youm-e-Ashur, commemorating Hazrat Imam Hussain's martyrdom, will be observed on July 17 with public holidays declared for Muharram.

The Central Moon Sighting Committee is set to convene on July 6 in Quetta to sight the crescent of Muharram, marking the beginning of the new Islamic year. Chaired by Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, the committee will gather to officially declare the start of Muharram. Simultaneously, meetings will be held in major cities like Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar, each overseen by their respective zonal committees. The sighting of the Muharram moon is a significant event as it signifies the onset of Muharram, which is anticipated to commence on July 8 in Pakistan this year.

Youm-e-Ashur, also known as the Day of Ashura, is expected to be observed on July 17, falling on a Wednesday. This day, observed on the 10th of Muharram, holds immense religious importance as it commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), at Karbala. Throughout Pakistan, this day is marked by mourning processions and gatherings, honoring the sacrifices made for the preservation of Islam. To facilitate the observance of Youm-e-Ashur, the federal government traditionally announces public holidays on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.

The sighting of the Muharram moon and the subsequent observance of Youm-e-Ashur are deeply rooted in Islamic traditions and hold great significance for the Muslim community in Pakistan. These events serve as reminders of the sacrifices made in the name of faith and provide an opportunity for reflection and spiritual growth.
