KARACHI: The relationship between China and Pakistan has long been characterized as an "all-weather strategic cooperation." This term signifies the strong and enduring partnership that both nations have cultivated over the years. Recently, Yang Yundong, the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Karachi, emphasized the importance of this relationship during a media briefing at the Chinese Consulate. He stated that under the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the cooperation between the two countries is set to deepen even further.

Yang highlighted the recent visit of Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang to Pakistan, which followed PM Shehbaz’s visit to Beijing, as a clear indication of the high-level cooperation between the two nations. He described the friendship between China and Pakistan as "iron-clad," suggesting that it is both strong and resilient. The Consul General noted that the relationship holds strategic significance, with both countries firmly supporting each other’s core interests and development paths.

One of the key areas of focus in this partnership is the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which aims to enhance connectivity and economic development. Yang mentioned that both sides are committed to upgrading CPEC and accelerating the construction of major projects, including railways, highways, and ports. Specifically, they are working on the Karachi-Hyderabad section, which will be implemented in phases to ensure efficiency and sustainability.

In addition to infrastructure projects, Yang emphasized the importance of financial support for various initiatives, including the Karakoram Highway realignment project. He also pointed out the need to develop the auxiliary infrastructure of Gwadar Port, which is crucial for attracting more cargo shipments and addressing issues related to water and power supply.

Moreover, the cooperation extends beyond infrastructure. Yang stated that both countries are deepening collaboration in sectors such as agriculture, mining, information technology, energy, trade, and culture. He expressed hope that Pakistan would improve its business environment to attract more Chinese investments, particularly in Special Economic Zones.

Yang also underscored China’s commitment to supporting Pakistan in improving the well-being of its people. Under the CPEC Working Group on Socio-Economic Cooperation, both nations will focus on healthcare, education, and disaster prevention, among other areas, to enhance the quality of life for citizens.

Security remains a priority in this partnership. Yang urged Pakistan to implement targeted security measures to protect Chinese personnel and projects, ensuring a safe environment for cooperation. He also highlighted the role of media in fostering understanding and promoting positive narratives about the bilateral relationship.

Reflecting on China’s remarkable journey over the past 75 years, Yang noted that the country has achieved significant economic and social development. With an average annual growth rate of 8.9% over 45 years, China has become a global leader in various sectors, including manufacturing and trade.

The deepening cooperation between China and Pakistan signifies a commitment to mutual growth and development. As both nations work together on various fronts, from infrastructure to socio-economic initiatives, the future of their partnership looks promising. This collaboration not only aims to enhance the economic landscape but also seeks to improve the lives of people in both countries, fostering a sense of shared progress and prosperity.
