Deputy commissioners of Sialkot and Gujarat districts assess flood readiness at Marala Headworks, emphasizing Chenab River's significance and evacuation plans for at-risk villages in Chapar region.

Deputy commissioners of Sialkot and Gujarat districts recently visited Marala Headworks to evaluate the region's readiness for potential flooding in the Chenab River. The officials were briefed on the flood control plan, emphasizing the significance of the Chenab River, which merges with Jammu Tawi and Manawar Tawi near Marala Headworks. This river flows into Pakistan from Akhnoor in Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, approximately 53km away from Salal Dam.

Marala Headworks, with a water flow capacity of 11 lakh cusecs, experienced its highest recorded flow of 8,61,463 cusecs in 2014. To ensure continuous monitoring, a flood control room has been set up at Marala Headworks, equipped with an emergency contact number. Villages such as Jhumian Dalalan, Patwal, Beli, Salehpur, and Kalyal in the Chapar region are at risk due to the water inflow, necessitating evacuation plans.

In the event of potential floods, residents in vulnerable areas will receive advance alerts to guarantee their safety. It is advised to relocate livestock outside the river embankment. District administrations are actively engaged in drills and inspections to prepare for emergencies, stressing the importance of proactive measures in reducing flood risks.

Ensuring the safety of communities in flood-prone areas is a top priority for the authorities. By implementing robust flood control measures and conducting regular assessments, the region aims to minimize the impact of potential disasters. Stay informed, stay safe!
