Goat rearing practices in South Punjab have the potential to significantly boost income levels by 20 to 50 percent compared to traditional methods, offering a promising solution to the prevalent issue of poverty in the region. Deputy Director Livestock, Dr. Jamshaid Akhtari, highlighted the importance of adopting modern rearing techniques, especially among cattle farmers in South Punjab who currently lack awareness in this area.

Popular goat breeds in the region such as Makhi Cheeni, Nugri, Nagri, and Faisalabadi beetal goats present lucrative opportunities for farmers to increase their earnings. Dr. Jamshaid emphasized the need for farmers to embrace modern practices to maximize the income potential from these breeds, underscoring the vital role goats can play in alleviating poverty in rural areas.

Often referred to as the 'Cows of the Poor,' goats are a practical livestock option for individuals with limited resources, including women, due to their manageable size and high demand for their meat. Additionally, goats have the capacity to address the protein deficiency prevalent in Pakistan, where the average protein consumption falls significantly below the recommended levels set by the Pakistan Protein Committee.

With goats capable of birthing twice a year, they offer a sustainable source of income and nutrition for households in South Punjab, contributing to the overall economic development of the region.
