ECC addresses national interests, approving key proposals for health, employee welfare, and climate change initiatives.

On Thursday, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet convened under the leadership of Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb. This meeting was crucial as it addressed various pressing issues that are of national interest to Pakistan. The gathering included key figures such as Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, and Minister of State for Finance and Revenue Mr. Ali Pervaiz Malik, along with senior officials from relevant ministries.

One of the significant topics discussed was the shortage of the Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV) at the Federal General Hospital Chak Shahzad in Islamabad. The ECC learned that the ARV, produced by the National Institute of Health Islamabad, was priced at Rs. 891.65. In contrast, the market prices for WHO-approved and non-WHO approved ARV were significantly higher, at Rs. 2126.40 and Rs. 1266.14, respectively. To ensure adequate supply and production, the ECC approved a proposal to raise the Maximum Retail Price of the ARV to Rs. 1980 per vial of 0.5ml/dose.

Additionally, the committee addressed the compensation of employees working for the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF). It was noted that their salaries were considerably lower than those of employees in other federal Law Enforcement Agencies, despite facing similar risks. The ECC approved an increase in the Special Allowance for ANF employees, amounting to Rs. 264.744 million, which will be funded from the current year’s budget.

Another important proposal discussed was from the Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination, which sought a Technical Supplementary Grant (TSG) of Rs. 150 million. This funding is intended to support Pakistan's participation in COP-29, scheduled to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024. The ECC recognized the significance of this event, as it would allow Pakistan to showcase its efforts in combating climate change through various initiatives, including renewable energy projects and disaster risk reduction measures.

The ECC also reviewed a proposal from the Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination for a TSG of Rs. 400 million to host the 14th edition of the South Asian Games in Pakistan next April. However, the committee decided that this proposal needed further refinement and would be resubmitted with a comprehensive plan detailing logistical costs and potential funding sources.

Lastly, a proposal from the Defence Division for a TSG of Rs. 45 billion for various approved defence projects was also approved. This funding is essential for the ongoing development and enhancement of Pakistan's defence capabilities.

The decisions made during this ECC meeting reflect the government's commitment to addressing critical issues affecting public health, employee welfare, climate change, and national security. As Pakistan navigates these challenges, it is imperative for the government to ensure transparency and efficiency in the allocation of resources, ultimately benefiting the citizens and fostering a more resilient nation.
