The Kenyan High Court grants 10 million KES compensation to the family of journalist Arshad Sharif, emphasizing human rights and accountability. Tragic attack in Ukraine underscores the need for global peace initiatives.

In a significant ruling, the High Court in Kajiado, Kenya, has granted 10 million Kenyan shillings in compensation to the family of journalist Arshad Sharif, who tragically lost his life in October 2022. Sharif, a respected senior journalist living in self-exile, was fatally shot by Kenyan police officers in Nairobi on October 23. The police later expressed remorse for the unfortunate incident.

Justice Stella Mutuku, presiding over the case, declared that the use of lethal force against Sharif was illegal and unconstitutional. She specifically pointed out that the shooting in the head was a clear violation of Sharif's rights. Following this ruling, Sharif's wife, Javeria Siddique, has requested relevant authorities to provide her with all pertinent documents and evidence related to the shooting.

The court's verdict emphasized that even though Sharif's shooting was acknowledged as a case of mistaken identity, it still constituted a breach of his rights. The judge issued directives to the Attorney General, Director of Public Prosecutions, Inspector General of Police, Independent Policing Oversight Authority, and the National Police Service Commission to fully cooperate with Siddique's requests.

Investigative journalist Brian Obuya raised concerns about the prolonged delay in the investigation findings of Sharif's murder. Obuya highlighted the extended duration taken by investigators to conclude the probe into Sharif's untimely death.

In a separate distressing incident, a daytime assault by Russia on Ukraine led to the deaths of at least 20 individuals and specifically targeted a children's hospital in Kyiv.

The ruling by the Kenyan High Court to compensate the family of Arshad Sharif serves as a crucial step towards justice for the slain journalist. The court's decision underscores the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring accountability for unlawful actions. Additionally, the tragic attack in Ukraine highlights the ongoing conflicts and devastating consequences of armed aggression. It is imperative for global communities to work towards peace and stability to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
