Lahore police rescue six boys from abuse, arresting a suspect involved in drugging and filming them, highlighting alarming child abuse statistics in Pakistan.

In a shocking incident that highlights the ongoing issue of child abuse in Pakistan, six boys were rescued from a private inn in Lahore by the police on Wednesday. This operation, led by the Data Darbar station house officer (SHO), resulted in the arrest of a suspect who is accused of drugging the children and filming illicit footage of them. The police have stated that they are actively pursuing the accomplices involved in this heinous crime.

City Superintendent of Police Captain (retd) Qazi Ali Raza emphasized the government's commitment to protecting children, stating, "In the light of the orders of Punjab chief minister, there is a zero-tolerance policy against those who abuse and sexually exploit children and women." This statement reflects a growing awareness and urgency to combat child abuse in the region.

According to data compiled by Sahil, an NGO dedicated to children's rights, the situation is alarming. In 2023 alone, an average of 11 children were abused every day, with most cases involving acquaintances and relatives. The report revealed that a total of 4,213 child abuse cases were reported across Pakistan, including the Islamabad Capital Territory, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. These cases encompass various forms of abuse, such as sexual exploitation, abduction, and child marriages.

The statistics are particularly concerning when broken down by gender. Out of the reported cases, 2,251 (53 percent) of the victims were girls, while 1,962 (47 percent) were boys. The data also indicated that children aged 6 to 15 years are the most vulnerable, with a higher number of boys being reported as victims compared to girls. Disturbingly, even children as young as 0 to 5 years have been subjected to sexual abuse.

The report further highlights that acquaintances remain the most common perpetrators of child sexual abuse, followed closely by relatives, family members, strangers, and women abettors. This underscores the need for increased vigilance and protective measures within families and communities.

Geographically, the majority of reported cases—75 percent—originated from Punjab, followed by Sindh (13 percent), Islamabad Capital Territory (7 percent), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (3 percent), and Balochistan, AJK, and GB (2 percent). These figures paint a grim picture of the prevalence of child abuse across the country.

As society grapples with these troubling statistics, it is crucial for communities to come together to protect their children. Awareness campaigns, education, and strict enforcement of laws against child abuse are essential steps in creating a safer environment for the younger generation. The recent police operation serves as a reminder that while progress is being made, there is still much work to be done to ensure that every child can grow up free from fear and harm.
