NHA is set to complete nine major road projects by December, enhancing connectivity and reducing travel times across Pakistan.

The National Highway Authority (NHA) of Pakistan is making significant strides in improving the country’s infrastructure. Out of a total of 35 major development projects, the NHA is set to complete nine projects by December this year. These projects, which are valued in billions of rupees, aim to enhance connectivity and reduce travel times across various regions of the country.

According to available documents, the NHA has prioritized these nine projects, which include the construction of new roads, bridges, and the dualization and up-gradation of existing roads. One of the most notable projects is the construction of a bridge over the River Ravi at Syed Wala in Nankana Sahib. This bridge, which was launched in 2012 with a two-year completion deadline, faced delays due to funding issues and land acquisition challenges. Once completed, it is expected to significantly reduce the travel distance from Nankana Sahib, Okara, and Sahiwal to Islamabad by 140 kilometers.

Another important project is the Baba Farid Bridge over the River Sutlej at Pakpattan. This bridge will connect Minchanabad and Pakpattan, addressing a longstanding issue for locals who previously had to travel over 90 kilometers to reach each district. With the new bridge, this distance will be cut down to just 35 kilometers, making travel much more convenient for residents.

The NHA is also finalizing the dualization and up-gradation of the 83-kilometer old Bannu road in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). This project is part of the Indus Highway (N-55) and has been divided into several packages, with work having started back in February 2018. The completion of this road will enhance connectivity in the region, facilitating smoother transportation for both goods and people.

In addition to these projects, the NHA is working on the dualization and improvement of the N-55 from Sarai Gambila to Kohat, as well as the construction of a 4-lane access-controlled motorway between Yarik and Sagu. These projects, which were launched a few years ago at a cost of around Rs 30 billion, include the construction of 26 bridges, including a major bridge over the Kurrum River.

Moreover, the NHA has plans to upgrade the Kohat-Karak section of the N-55 and complete the construction of the 32-kilometer long Peshawar Northern road this year. This dual carriageway will link the Jamrud area of Khyber Agency with the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway, enhancing trade with Afghanistan.

As the year comes to a close, the NHA is also set to witness the functioning of the 8.7-kilometer long northern portion of the Peshawar ring road, which will feature a dual carriageway with six lanes and service roads. This project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve travel efficiency in the region.

In summary, the NHA's commitment to completing these nine major projects by December is a significant step towards enhancing Pakistan's infrastructure. With improved roads and bridges, the NHA is not only facilitating better connectivity but also contributing to economic growth by making transportation more efficient. As these projects come to fruition, they will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the lives of many citizens, making travel easier and more accessible across the country.
