Sindh Implements Biometric Verification for Vehicle Registration

KARACHI: In a significant move aimed at enhancing transparency and curbing illegal activities, the Sindh government has mandated biometric verification for vehicle registration and transfers throughout the province. This new policy, announced by Sindh Excise Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, is set to be implemented in three distinct phases, ensuring that all vehicle transactions are secure and legitimate.

The first phase of this initiative will commence on July 1st, when biometric verification will become a requirement for registering new vehicles. This means that anyone looking to buy a new vehicle will need to provide their biometric data, which can be easily done at designated centers. Following this, the second phase will take effect on November 1st, requiring individuals who purchase vehicles to also undergo biometric verification. Finally, the third phase will enforce biometric checks for both buyers and sellers during the vehicle transfer process.

Minister Memon emphasized that this initiative is just the beginning of a broader effort to modernize the Excise Department. He stated, “This is just the beginning,” highlighting the government's commitment to ensuring that all vehicle transactions are transparent and free from fraud. The introduction of biometric verification is expected to significantly reduce illegal transfers and fraudulent activities that have plagued the vehicle registration process in the past.

Citizens can conveniently complete their biometric verification at NADRA e-facilitation centers or at their local district excise offices. This accessibility is crucial, as it allows individuals to fulfill the new requirements without unnecessary hassle. Since taking office, Memon has been proactive in introducing measures to modernize the Sindh Excise and Taxation Department. For instance, in August, he implemented directives that allow vehicle registration to be conducted directly at showrooms, making the process more convenient for the public.

In addition to these changes, the minister has also confirmed plans to launch the second phase of issuing premium number plates. This phase will involve the sale of 50 premium plates, which will serve as a fundraising event for flood relief efforts, showcasing the government's dedication to both modernization and social responsibility.

The introduction of mandatory biometric verification for vehicle registration and transfers in Sindh marks a pivotal step towards a more transparent and efficient system.
