Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) expands flight services to northern areas amidst privatization process. Government aims to enhance efficiency by outsourcing operations at key airports.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced additional flights to the northern areas of the country to cater to the increasing demand as summer approaches. The national airline will be operating two weekly flights from Islamabad to Chitral starting from May 18th, providing more travel options for citizens. Additionally, PIA will also commence two-way flights from Dubai to Skardu from April 29th, expanding its services to facilitate travelers.

These developments come amidst the ongoing privatization process of PIA by the federal government. The decision to privatize the airline was initiated in response to financial challenges and operational issues faced by the national carrier. The Privatisation Ordinance was promulgated to streamline the privatization process and eliminate legal obstacles, signaling a significant shift in the management of the airline.

Furthermore, PIA has encountered various hurdles such as account freezes by the Federal Board of Revenue and fuel supply disruptions from Pakistan State Oil. Despite resolving disputes and acquiring additional aircraft, the airline's long-term sustainability remains a concern, prompting policymakers to move towards privatization.

In addition to privatizing PIA, the government is also planning to outsource operations at key airports including Jinnah International Airport Karachi, Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore, and Islamabad International Airport. The outsourcing initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency and improve public service delivery, starting with the Islamabad International Airport for a 15-year period before extending to the other two airports.
