On a significant day for Pakistan-China relations, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made a visit to the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad. This visit came in the wake of a troubling incident that occurred in Karachi, where Chinese nationals were injured due to a firing attack. Such incidents raise serious concerns about the safety of foreign nationals in Pakistan, particularly those from countries with which Pakistan shares strong ties, like China.
During his visit, Prime Minister Sharif expressed his deep condemnation of the attack, emphasizing that it was an unfortunate event that should never have happened. He met with Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, to convey his sympathies and to assure him that the Pakistani government is taking this matter very seriously. The Prime Minister stated, "I am here to condemn yesterday’s attack on Chinese nationals and to inquire about the health of those injured in the incident." In a press release from the PM Office Media Wing, it was highlighted that the Prime Minister is personally overseeing the investigation into the incident. He assured the ambassador that those responsible would be apprehended swiftly and face exemplary punishment. This is a crucial step in restoring confidence among foreign nationals working in Pakistan, as it demonstrates the government’s dedication to their safety.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister directed that the best medical facilities be provided to the injured Chinese citizens. He noted with relief that their health was improving, which is a positive sign amidst the distressing circumstances. Accompanying the Prime Minister were Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for Interior Mohsin Raza Naqvi, and Special Assistant to PM Tariq Fatemi, all of whom share the responsibility of ensuring the safety of foreign nationals.
Prime Minister Sharif reiterated the importance of the relationship between Pakistan and China, stating that the attack was a desperate attempt to undermine the fraternal ties between the two nations. He emphasized that the security of Chinese nationals working in Pakistan is a top priority for his government. This commitment is vital, especially as China plays a significant role in Pakistan’s economic development through various projects.
