Punjab Police intensify crackdown on smog violations, arresting offenders and imposing significant fines to protect public health.
In recent times, the issue of smog has become a pressing concern in Punjab, Pakistan. The dense fog that envelops cities, particularly Lahore, not only affects visibility but also poses serious health risks to the population. To combat this environmental menace, the Punjab Police, under the leadership of Inspector General of Police Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, has intensified its crackdown on smog violations. This initiative aims to ensure compliance with the established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) designed to mitigate smog and protect the environment.
Over the last 24 hours, the Punjab Police have taken significant steps to address this issue. A total of 7 cases were registered, and 2 suspects were arrested during the crackdown. The police imposed fines exceeding Rs. 800,000 on 477 individuals for various violations, while 30 others received warnings. The reported violations included one case of crop residue burning, 392 instances of excessive smoke emissions from vehicles, and three violations by brick kilns. This year alone, the anti-smog campaign has led to the arrest of 3,132 offenders and the registration of 3,730 cases, with fines totaling over Rs. 92.8 million imposed on 37,487 violators.
The statistics reveal a concerning trend, with 1,999 cases of crop residue burning and 32,609 cases of excessive smoke from vehicles reported. The Punjab Police have also taken action against industrial violations, brick kilns, and other locations contributing to the smog crisis. In the last 24 hours, 5,187 vehicles emitting excessive smoke were fined, and 603 were impounded. The police have suspended fitness certificates for 10,089 vehicles this year, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
Dr. Usman Anwar has emphasized the need for a zero-tolerance policy against those violating smog SOPs. He has directed the police to accelerate their efforts on highways, in industrial areas, and agricultural fields. The message is clear: strict action will be taken without delay to protect the environment and public health.
In addition to the anti-smog efforts, the Punjab Police are also making strides in combating heinous crimes across the province. Under Dr. Anwar's supervision, 6,301 criminal gangs have been dismantled, leading to the arrest of 15,741 individuals. The police have recovered stolen properties worth over Rs. 4.73 billion, including vehicles, motorcycles, gold, mobile phones, and cattle. This demonstrates the police's commitment to ensuring safety and security for the citizens of Punjab.
As the Punjab Police continue their dual mission of tackling smog and eradicating crime, it is essential for the public to cooperate with law enforcement efforts. By adhering to environmental regulations and reporting suspicious activities, citizens can play a vital role in creating a safer and cleaner Punjab. The fight against smog and crime is a collective responsibility, and together, we can pave the way for a healthier future.
