RTA fines transporters Rs. 142,000 for overcharging, refunds Rs. 120,400 to commuters, ensuring fair pricing in the transport sector.

In a significant move to protect commuters from unfair practices, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has taken decisive action against transporters who have been overcharging passengers. This crackdown comes in response to numerous complaints from the public regarding excessive fares on the M-9 and M-5 Motorways.

On a recent inspection, the RTA team stopped 82 passenger buses and cargo carriers to ensure compliance with government-fixed fare rates. The Secretary of the RTA, Saleem Memon, reported that the authority imposed fines totaling Rs. 142,000 on transporters found in violation of the motor vehicle ordinance. Additionally, Rs. 120,400 was returned to the affected passengers, highlighting the RTA's commitment to safeguarding consumer rights.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy directed by Senior Sindh Minister for Excise and Transportation, Sharjeel Inam Memon, aimed at ensuring fair pricing in the transport sector. The involvement of key officials, including the Secretary of the Transport Department, Asad Zaman, and Deputy Commissioner Hyderabad, Zainul Abedin Memon, underscores the seriousness of this issue.

Such measures are crucial in maintaining public trust in the transportation system. Commuters rely on these services for their daily travel needs, and it is essential that they are not subjected to unfair charges. The RTA's actions serve as a reminder to transporters that adherence to regulations is not optional but a requirement for operating within the province.

The RTA's recent enforcement actions reflect a growing awareness of the need for accountability in the transport sector. As the authorities continue to monitor and regulate fare practices, it is hoped that this will lead to a more transparent and fair transportation system for all. Commuters deserve to travel without the worry of being overcharged, and with these steps, the RTA is making strides toward achieving that goal.
