SFA DG Muzamil Hussain Halepoto seeks media support to combat food adulteration and enhance public health awareness in Karachi.
KARACHI - Food safety is a pressing issue in Pakistan, where the prevalence of food adulteration poses significant risks to public health. The Sindh Food Authority (SFA) has been at the forefront of combating these challenges, ensuring that the food consumed by the public is safe and hygienic. In a recent effort to bolster this mission, the Director General (DG) of SFA, Muzamil Hussain Halepoto, met with leaders from the Karachi Press Club (KPC) to seek their support in raising awareness about unsafe food practices.
During the meeting, which included KPC President Saeed Sarbazi, Secretary Shoaib Ahmed, and other Governing Body members, Halepoto outlined the proactive measures taken by the SFA against food adulteration. He emphasized the authority's commitment to public health, detailing actions against the sale of loose oil, milk adulteration, and expired food products. Halepoto stated, "We are unwavering in our commitment to safeguarding public health," highlighting the importance of these initiatives.
Halepoto also shared insights into the SFA's operations across all districts of Sindh, focusing on inclusivity and empowerment. Notably, he mentioned that women play a crucial role in the authority, leading teams in seven districts. This approach not only promotes gender equality but also enhances the effectiveness of food safety measures.
In terms of infrastructure, the DG informed the press about the advancements in food testing capabilities. He noted, "We currently have three functional laboratories in Karachi, Jamshoro, and Sukkur, and three additional labs will become operational in the coming days." This expansion is vital for ensuring that food products are tested rigorously, thereby protecting consumers from harmful substances.
Furthermore, Halepoto announced plans to enhance scientific research and policy-making by forming specialized panels. A Scientific Panel on Loose Oil has already been established, which recommended banning the sale of loose oil due to health concerns. He added, "Additionally, a Scientific Panel on Water will soon be established to address water safety issues comprehensively." These initiatives reflect a systematic approach to tackling food safety challenges.
Recognizing the media's influential role, Halepoto urged journalists to support the SFA in its mission. He stated that media coverage is essential for encouraging compliance and fostering a culture of accountability among food vendors. The collaboration between the SFA and the media can significantly amplify the message of food safety, ensuring that the public is well-informed about the risks associated with unhygienic food products.
As a token of appreciation, the President and General Secretary of the Karachi Press Club presented Halepoto with a Sindhi Ajrak and a commemorative shield. They assured him of the media's full support in highlighting the SFA's initiatives aimed at protecting public health from substandard food.
The fight against food adulteration is a collective responsibility that requires the involvement of various stakeholders, including government authorities, the media, and the public. By working together, we can create a safer food environment for everyone. Awareness and education are key components in this battle, and with continued efforts from the SFA and support from the media, there is hope for a healthier future.
