Afghan Consul General's Disrespect Sparks Diplomatic Tensions in Peshawar

In a significant diplomatic incident, Pakistan's Foreign Office has formally protested against the actions of the Afghan Consul General, Muhibullah Shakir, during a recent event in Peshawar. The spokesperson stated, "the disrespect of host country’s national anthem is against diplomatic norms," highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

In response to this incident, the Afghan charge d'affaires was summoned to the Foreign Office, where a strong protest was lodged. The spokesperson reiterated that such behavior is not only disrespectful but also undermines the diplomatic relationship between the two countries. Experts in security and diplomatic protocols have pointed out that Shakir's actions conveyed a lack of respect for Pakistan and its national identity.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, it has been reported that the documentation of the Afghan Consul General is incomplete. He reportedly does not possess a valid Afghan passport or any other necessary documents, raising questions about his status in Pakistan. According to sources, Shakir and his family returned to Afghanistan in 2015 with assistance from the UNHCR, and their current residency status is questionable as Afghan refugees are required to regularize their stay by September 1, 2024.

In light of these developments, experts have called for the Pakistani government to declare Shakir "persona non grata," effectively sending him back to Afghanistan. They argue that inviting such diplomats to official ceremonies, who do not show respect for Pakistan's national symbols, is a matter that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government should also address.

In defense of the Consul General, a spokesman from the Afghan consulate in Peshawar stated that there was no intention to insult Pakistan or its national anthem. He explained that the presence of music during the anthem's performance led to Shakir's decision to remain seated, claiming that had the anthem been played without music or performed by children, the Consul General would have stood and shown respect.
