Experts Advocate Balanced Social Media Regulation in Pakistan

In today's digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives, shaping how we communicate, share information, and engage with the world around us. However, with the rapid growth of these platforms, concerns about their regulation have emerged. Experts are now calling for a balanced approach to social media regulation that aligns with national laws, aiming to protect civil rights while ensuring national security.

Recently, a roundtable discussion was held at the National Institute of Public Policy (NIPP) in Lahore, where various experts gathered to address the pressing issues surrounding social media. The session was chaired by NIPP Rector Dr. Ijaz Munir and moderated by Dean Dr. Naveed Ehali. Notable speakers included Farooq Mazhar, Director General of the National Institute of Management, and Dr. Taimur Rehman, an Associate Professor at LUMS, among others.

The discussion highlighted the unchecked spread of social media and the gaps in current regulations. Dr. Fareed Zafar emphasized the importance of public education on responsible social media use, pointing out the harmful effects of misinformation and sensationalism. He argued that strengthening and enforcing cybersecurity laws is crucial in combating these issues.

Dr. Taimur Rehman supported the call for effective regulation, advocating for media literacy programs that encourage responsible social media use. He stressed that well-structured laws are necessary to tackle the challenges posed by the digital landscape. Meanwhile, Professor Dr. Savera Shami proposed public awareness campaigns to inform citizens about the negative impacts of unrestricted social media use.

Dr. Shami also suggested that international social media companies should establish offices in Pakistan to create a more regulated environment. She highlighted the need for timely law enforcement to address extremism and hate speech, which have become increasingly prevalent online.

During a Q&A session, participants discussed various proposals aimed at tightening social media regulations. The event concluded with Dr. Ijaz Munir presenting shields to the participants, recognizing their valuable contributions to the discussion.
