Maulana Fazlur Rehman demands fresh elections after being re-elected JUI-F chief, criticizing the current parliament and government actions.

In a significant political development, Maulana Fazlur Rehman has been re-elected as the chief of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) for another five years. This event took place during the party's intra-party elections held in Peshawar on Sunday. Following his re-election, Fazl did not hold back in expressing his discontent with the current government, labeling the existing parliament as a "fake parliament" that lacks a legitimate mandate to undertake major constitutional amendments.

Fazl's call for fresh general elections underscores a growing sentiment among various political factions in Pakistan. He stated, "We want a fresh [general] election," emphasizing that the current parliament is unworthy of making significant constitutional changes. This statement comes at a time when the government is pushing a proposed constitutional package, which has raised eyebrows amid speculation regarding the potential extension of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa's tenure, who is due to retire in October.

The political landscape has been further complicated by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party's recent request for an early notification regarding the appointment of the next chief justice. Despite efforts from the ruling coalition, including multiple meetings with Fazl by leaders from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), no consensus has been reached.

Fazl elaborated on ongoing discussions with the PPP and PTI, indicating that the JUI-F and these parties would collaborate on draft amendments. He stressed the importance of amendments that would provide relief to the public and strengthen democracy, while also maintaining the sovereignty of parliament. He remarked, "Judicial reforms should not be individual-centric," highlighting the need for reforms that benefit the broader society rather than specific individuals.

Moreover, Fazl criticized the government's actions against the PTI, particularly the ban on public gatherings for the party founded by former Prime Minister Imran Khan. He described this move as undemocratic and insisted that the PTI should be allowed to hold public demonstrations. In a separate remark, he condemned Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur's threatening tone, labeling it a "childish attitude."

In a show of political courtesy, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif extended his congratulations to Maulana Fazl on his unanimous election as JUI-F president. The Prime Minister acknowledged Fazl's leadership, stating that under his guidance, the JUI-F has effectively represented the people. He expressed hope that Fazl's continued leadership would promote democratic values and reinforce the supremacy of parliament in Pakistan.

This political scenario raises important questions about the future of democracy in Pakistan. As various parties navigate their positions and alliances, the call for fresh elections by Fazl may resonate with many citizens who seek a more representative and accountable government. The coming months will be crucial in determining how these political dynamics unfold and what they mean for the everyday lives of the Pakistani people.
