Former Senator Mushtaq Ahmed and 43 others arrested during a protest in Islamabad against the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon.
ISLAMABAD - On a day marked by significant unrest, a protest outside the National Press Club in Islamabad led to the arrest of approximately 50 individuals, including former Senator Mushtaq Ahmed and activist Humaira Tayyaba. This demonstration was organized by the Save Gaza Campaign in response to the tragic events unfolding in Lebanon, where recent reports indicate that around 700 people have lost their lives, including 100 children and 41 medical personnel.
The protest aimed to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis and express solidarity with those affected. However, the situation escalated when police intervened. According to a police official, 37 males and 8 females were taken into custody, although the organizers claimed that a minor girl was among those arrested. This discrepancy highlights the tension between the protestors and law enforcement.
Former Senator Mushtaq Ahmed had reportedly received a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to hold the protest outside the press club. However, he allegedly encouraged the crowd to march towards D-Chowk, prompting a swift police response. The police, equipped with batons, charged at the protestors, leading to a chaotic scene that resulted in multiple arrests.
In a separate event, Agha Jawad Naqvi of Majlis e Wahdatal Muslimeen (MWM) conducted a peaceful rally from Abpara Chowk to the Embassy, demonstrating that not all gatherings were met with police resistance. This contrast raises questions about the criteria used by law enforcement to manage public demonstrations.
The Save Gaza Campaign organizers estimated that between 250 to 300 protestors had gathered, intending to conduct a Solidarity Walk along Shaheed e Millat road. However, the heavy police presence and subsequent baton charge disrupted their plans, leading to a significant number of arrests.
This incident underscores the ongoing struggle for free expression and the right to protest in Pakistan. As citizens rally for causes they believe in, the balance between maintaining public order and allowing peaceful demonstrations remains a contentious issue. The events of Sunday serve as a reminder of the importance of dialogue and understanding in addressing the grievances of the people.
