Imran Khan, the PTI founder, faces legal scrutiny as the UN Working Group questions his detention's political motives and legal inconsistencies, sparking calls for his release and a fair investigation.

Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been at the center of a legal and political storm. The United Nations' Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has raised serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding Imran Khan's detention and prosecution in the Toshakhana and cypher cases. The Working Group has declared that his detention was unjust and politically motivated, aimed at preventing him from participating in politics.

Imran Khan's legal troubles began when he was convicted by the Election Commission of Pakistan for concealing details of state gifts, resulting in a three-year jail sentence. Despite being disqualified from holding office for five years, the Islamabad High Court later suspended his sentence. The UN body criticized the legal inconsistencies and irregularities in the court proceedings against Imran Khan, highlighting that his detention lacked a legal basis and was likely intended to bar him from running for office.

The Working Group pointed out the questionable nature of Imran's conviction in the Toshakhana case and his subsequent arrest, which involved a controversial break-in at his residence. It also cast doubts on the legitimacy of the prosecution in the cypher case, noting that the charges did not align with the Official Secrets Act. The timing of Imran's multiple prosecutions, coinciding with an upcoming general election, raised suspicions of political motives to hinder his political participation.

In response to the Working Group's findings, calls have been made for Imran Khan's immediate release, compensation for his arbitrary detention, and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his imprisonment. The PTI has welcomed the Working Group's opinion as a significant development in the ongoing legal saga surrounding Imran Khan.

Currently, Imran Khan is serving his sentence in the Iddat case at Adiala Jail, with his sentences in the Toshakhana cases suspended and his acquittal in the cypher case upheld by the Islamabad High Court. However, a recent decision by a district and sessions court in Islamabad rejected pleas to suspend the seven-year sentences of Imran Khan and his wife in the Iddat case.

The UN Working Group's assessment sheds light on the complex legal and political challenges faced by Imran Khan. The call for his release and a fair investigation underscores the importance of upholding justice and human rights in the face of political pressures.
