Iran's Ambassador praises Pakistan for hosting the SCO trade meeting, emphasizing regional cooperation and economic potential.
In a significant diplomatic gesture, the Ambassador of Iran to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, recently commended Pakistan for its successful hosting of the 23rd Meeting of Ministers of Trade and Commerce of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states. This meeting, which brought together representatives from various countries, highlighted the importance of trade and cooperation in a region that is home to a large portion of the world's population and resources.
Ambassador Moghadam expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality shown to the visiting delegations, emphasizing the importance of such gatherings in fostering international relations. The SCO, which covers about 80% of Eurasia's landmass and represents 40% of the global population, plays a crucial role in promoting economic collaboration among its members. With significant reserves of oil and gas, the SCO's combined GDP reached an impressive $24.2 trillion in 2023, accounting for roughly one-fourth of the world's total GDP.
Currently, the SCO comprises 10 full members, two observer states, and 14 dialogue partners. Ambassador Moghadam noted the potential for further expansion as more nations recognize the strategic advantages of joining this influential organization. He stated, "Activating all the capacities of the member countries in this organization is important, and it must be done through cooperation and collective synergy." This highlights the need for unity and collaboration among member states to maximize their economic potential.
Transportation infrastructure and trade corridors are vital for enhancing cooperation between SCO members. The Ambassador called for the completion of existing trade routes, including the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the North-South Corridor, and the East-West Corridor. These projects are seen as essential for boosting economic synergy within the SCO and connecting its members to global markets.
Ambassador Moghadam took pride in Iran's strategic geographical position, boasting a coastline of 5,800 kilometers. He specifically pointed out the importance of key Iranian ports such as Chabahar, Bandar Abbas, and Mahshahr, which serve as critical transit points for both the North-South and East-West corridors. This underscores Iran's significant role in regional trade and its potential to facilitate economic growth.
Furthermore, the Ambassador elaborated on Iran's extensive railway network, which, with minimal investment, could play a crucial role in connecting SCO countries. He mentioned, "Our country has made special provisions and incentives for investment in coastal and northern areas, aiming to connect the railway lines of the member countries." This initiative could pave the way for enhanced trade and cooperation among member states.
Ambassador Moghadam expressed optimism that through collective efforts, SCO members could focus on completing vital transit lines, establishing trade facilities, and creating financial institutions. These steps are essential for fostering long-term economic growth and prosperity in the region. As nations work together to strengthen their ties, the potential for a more interconnected and prosperous future becomes increasingly attainable.
