In recent years, Pakistan has faced a multitude of crises, ranging from political instability to economic challenges. At the heart of these issues lies a fundamental question: how well are we upholding our constitution? This question was at the forefront of a recent speech by Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, the Chief of Jamaat-e-Islami, who passionately argued that the failure to adhere to the constitution is the root cause of the nation’s troubles.

During a book launch event at Mansoora, Rehman highlighted the importance of both Islam and the constitution as the unifying foundations of Pakistan. He pointed out that the constitution, which was unanimously adopted by all political parties in 1973, has been under constant threat from military dictators and the ruling elite over the past fifty years. This ongoing struggle to protect the constitution has led to a series of crises that have plagued the country.

One of the key points Rehman made was regarding the recent 26th amendment, which he suggested was designed to tighten control over the judiciary. This, he argued, is just one example of how the ruling class seeks to maintain its grip on power, often at the expense of justice and fairness for the common people. Rehman reflected on the historical context of Pakistan’s creation, recalling the efforts of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the dreams of a nation that have yet to be fully realized.

He lamented that while the British colonial rulers have long departed, they left behind a loyalist ruling elite and a colonial system that continues to thrive. This legacy, according to Rehman, must be dismantled. He called for a united and organized movement to rid the nation of this ruling class, which he claimed benefits only a select few while the majority of the population struggles to meet basic needs.

Rehman also drew attention to the breakup of Pakistan in the 1970s, attributing it to the failure to fulfill the objectives for which the country was founded. He warned that the current state of lawlessness and the absence of justice are direct consequences of the 1973 constitution not being fully implemented. This situation calls for urgent action and a recommitment to the principles enshrined in the constitution.

Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman’s remarks serve as a crucial reminder of the importance of upholding the constitution as a means to ensure national unity and progress. As citizens, it is our responsibility to advocate for justice, equality, and adherence to the rule of law. Only by doing so can we hope to overcome the challenges that lie ahead and work towards a brighter future for Pakistan.
