In a significant development for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a grand jirga convened on Thursday, assigning Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur the crucial task of addressing peace-related issues in the province. This comes in the wake of a three-day gathering organized by the recently banned Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM), which has raised concerns about national peace and security. The federal government imposed a ban on the PTM just days prior, citing threats that could disrupt the stability of the region.

On Tuesday, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government took further steps to maintain order by prohibiting its officials from participating in the Pashtoon Qaumi Jirga, also known as the Pashtun Qaumi Adalat, organized by the PTM. Additionally, Khyber Deputy Commissioner retired Captain Sanaullah Khan enforced Section 144 in the district for 30 days, a move aimed at preventing any potential unrest.

Despite these restrictions, diehard PTM activists gathered in Jamrud, demonstrating their determination to proceed with the planned event. The political landscape has been tense, with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party condemning the ban and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly criticizing police actions that led to tragic incidents resulting in three deaths.

In response to the escalating situation, KP government spokesperson Barrister Mohammad Saif reiterated the federal government's stance while also announcing that CM Gandapur had called for a grand jirga to address the tensions. This meeting took place at the Chief Minister’s House and was attended by various political leaders, including KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

During the jirga, a statement from Barrister Saif revealed that the members had entrusted CM Gandapur with the responsibility of conducting a peace jirga with all relevant stakeholders. The Chief Minister accepted this responsibility, expressing gratitude for the trust placed in him. He emphasized the importance of finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing issues, stating, "Protection of life and property of the citizens is our first responsibility and priority."

CM Gandapur highlighted that conflict and violence are not the solutions to the problems faced by the province. Instead, he advocated for negotiations, stating, "The opinions and suggestions of all the political leaders participating in the jirga will be fully respected." His commitment to dialogue reflects a broader understanding that unity and collaboration are essential for peace.

Governor Kundi echoed these sentiments, stressing the need for political unity to tackle the challenges facing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He acknowledged the existing political differences but underscored that the safety and prosperity of the province should remain the top priority. His call for dialogue with those who respect the Constitution and laws is a crucial step towards fostering a collaborative environment.

As the situation continues to evolve, the grand jirga represents a pivotal moment for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The commitment from both the Chief Minister and the Governor to prioritize peace and dialogue over conflict is a hopeful sign for the province's future. It is essential for all stakeholders to come together, set aside political differences, and work towards a common goal: the safety and well-being of the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Only through collective efforts can lasting peace be achieved, ensuring a brighter future for all.
