CM Maryam Nawaz launches a 3-marla housing scheme in Punjab, providing interest-free loans to empower the underprivileged.
In a significant move aimed at addressing the housing crisis in Punjab, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved a new scheme to provide three-marla plots to deserving individuals under the initiative titled "Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar." This program is designed to assist those in need, particularly focusing on the underprivileged segments of society. The approval came during a meeting held in Lahore, where the chief minister reviewed the details of the program.
During her address, Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the scheme will initially benefit the Christian community, with a total of 666 plots earmarked for allocation to deserving citizens. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that every individual has access to a roof over their head, which is a fundamental right. The meeting also highlighted that the first installment of loans has already been disbursed to 927 applicants, marking a significant step forward in the implementation of the project.
Moreover, the government has approved the provision of furniture and essential items for the first five homes that have been completed under this project. The "Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar" program is being hailed as the first major interest-free housing project in Pakistan's history, which is a remarkable achievement. Earlier this month, the Punjab government commenced the distribution of cheques to eligible families, enabling them to construct their own homes.
Notably, both Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz attended the cheque distribution ceremony as chief guests, reinforcing their commitment to this noble cause. Maryam Nawaz reiterated that the Punjab government is dedicated to fulfilling Nawaz Sharif's vision of empowering the needy to build their own houses. With around 500,000 applications received for the program, it is clear that there is a substantial demand for such initiatives.
Under the scheme, eligible individuals can receive loans of up to PKR 1.5 million. For those in rural areas, loans are available for houses up to 10 marlas, with monthly repayments set at PKR 14,000. In urban areas, the same loan amount applies for houses up to 5 marlas, also repayable at PKR 14,000 per month. Additionally, in major cities, the government plans to construct four-story flats on public land, which will be allocated through a lottery system and offered on easy installment plans.
Furthermore, private housing schemes are being introduced, providing homes ranging from 3 to 5 marlas, with the government offering a subsidy of up to PKR 1 million per house. This comprehensive approach not only aims to provide housing but also seeks to stimulate the economy by creating jobs in the construction sector.
The "Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar" program represents a pivotal step towards alleviating the housing woes faced by many in Punjab. By providing financial assistance and facilitating home ownership, the government is not only addressing immediate needs but also fostering a sense of stability and security among its citizens. As this initiative unfolds, it will be crucial to monitor its impact and ensure that it reaches those who need it the most, ultimately contributing to a more equitable society.
