Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announces Rs218 billion for Karachi's development amid pressing infrastructure needs.
Karachi, the bustling metropolis of Pakistan, is in dire need of substantial financial investment for its development. According to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, the city requires approximately Rs1000 billion annually to address its infrastructure and development challenges. However, due to limited resources, the provincial government has allocated Rs218 billion for this year’s development projects.
During a recent meeting with the elected body of the National Press Club Islamabad, Chief Minister Shah emphasized the pressing need for funds to transform Karachi into a livable city. He cited a World Bank study indicating that around $3 billion is essential for this transformation. Despite the significant gap between the required and allocated funds, Shah remains committed to improving the city’s infrastructure.
Shah pointed out that the city has faced numerous challenges, including the encroachment of public spaces and the mismanagement of drainage systems. He noted that commercial activities have taken over important roads, leading to severe traffic congestion. "Due to resource constraints, only Rs218 billion has been allocated for Karachi's development," he stated, highlighting the ongoing struggle to manage the city’s growth effectively.
In response to the issues of flooding and drainage, the Chief Minister mentioned that major nullahs have been cleaned, and new stormwater drains have been constructed to alleviate standing water problems. Additionally, the government has focused on reconstructing major roads and developing flyovers and underpasses to ensure smoother traffic flow.
Shah also discussed the progress of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, with the Orange line already developed and work on the Red and Yellow lines underway. He expressed his commitment to the people of Karachi, stating, "Karachi is a metropolis city, and we are committed to our people and would resolve all its issues." The introduction of the People’s Bus Service, including a dedicated Pink bus service for women, has been a significant step towards providing relief to the residents.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister highlighted the success of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Unit, which has been recognized for its transparency and performance, ranking 6th in Asia. He mentioned the construction of three bridges over the River Indus and the ongoing development of the Malir Expressway, which is expected to open a portion for traffic by the end of the month.
In a broader context, Shah noted the social harmony in regions like Thar, where diverse communities coexist peacefully. He pointed out that the crime rate is remarkably low, with only about 50 FIRs registered in a year. This reflects the positive impact of inclusive governance, as evidenced by the election of representatives from various communities in the Sindh Assembly.
The Chief Minister also took pride in the development of educational institutions and healthcare facilities, including the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases. These institutions serve not only the people of Sindh but also patients from neighboring countries, showcasing the province's commitment to healthcare.
While the challenges facing Karachi are significant, the government’s commitment to development and infrastructure improvement is evident. The allocation of Rs218 billion, although insufficient compared to the estimated needs, is a step towards addressing the city’s pressing issues. As Karachi continues to grow, the focus on sustainable development and community welfare will be crucial in ensuring a better quality of life for its residents.
