Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz consider launching Air Punjab to revitalize Pakistan's aviation sector amid PIA's financial struggles.

In a significant development for the aviation sector in Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, the President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has disclosed that his daughter, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, is contemplating the launch of a new airline named "Air Punjab." This proposal comes at a time when the national carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), is facing severe financial challenges and is under the government's scrutiny for potential privatization.

During a recent statement, Nawaz Sharif mentioned, "Maryam has asked me why not we should launch a new airline and give it the name of Air Punjab." This idea reflects a proactive approach to revitalize the aviation industry in the region. He further suggested that the new airline could also consider acquiring PIA, which is currently struggling to maintain its operations amid ongoing efforts by the government to sell a stake in the loss-making carrier.

The proposed "Air Punjab" aims to establish direct flights connecting major cities such as Lahore, Karachi, and Peshawar to international destinations including New York and Tokyo. This initiative could potentially enhance travel options for Pakistanis and promote tourism, thereby contributing positively to the economy.

Nawaz Sharif did not hold back in criticizing former aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar, who served during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government. He accused Sarwar of damaging PIA's reputation by making public statements regarding the licenses of pilots, which may have further exacerbated the airline's troubles.

As of October 31, the bidding process for the privatization of PIA has commenced, but it has not attracted much interest. Currently, there is only one participant in the bidding, Saad Nazir, the chairman of Blue World City, who has placed a bid of Rs10 billion. This amount falls significantly short of the Privatisation Commission's expectations, which were set at Rs85.03 billion.

The idea of launching "Air Punjab" could be seen as a strategic move to fill the void left by PIA's declining performance. If successful, this new airline could not only provide better services to travelers but also create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the region. However, the challenges ahead are substantial, and it remains to be seen how this ambitious plan will unfold in the competitive aviation market.

The potential launch of "Air Punjab" by Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz represents a bold step towards revitalizing Pakistan's aviation industry. As the nation grapples with the complexities of privatizing PIA, the introduction of a new airline could offer a fresh perspective and a much-needed boost to the sector. It is essential for stakeholders to carefully consider the implications of such initiatives and work collaboratively to ensure the success of any new ventures in the aviation landscape.
