Pakistan and the US agree to schedule the next TIFA meeting, focusing on enhancing trade relations in key sectors.

On Thursday, Pakistan and the United States reached a significant agreement to schedule the next meeting under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) in the near future. This meeting is crucial as it aims to enhance trade relations between the two countries, focusing on key sectors such as agriculture, textiles, women’s empowerment, information technology, and e-commerce.

During a virtual meeting, Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan engaged with United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai. The discussions were centered around strengthening the economic ties that bind Pakistan and the US. Minister Jam Kamal extended an invitation to Tai to attend Pakistan’s TEXPO, which is set to take place in October 2024. Tai expressed her gratitude for the invitation and showed a keen interest in visiting Pakistan during this event.

In a reciprocal gesture, Tai invited Minister Kamal to visit Washington, aiming to explore further trade opportunities. This exchange highlights the mutual interest both nations have in fostering a robust economic partnership. Minister Jam Kamal emphasized that the US remains Pakistan’s top trading destination, underlining the country’s eagerness to expand this partnership even further.

During the discussions, Jam Kamal highlighted Pakistan’s strong performance in the agriculture sector, particularly in the production of mangoes and dates. He pointed out the potential for growth in value-added agro-services, which could significantly benefit both countries. Katherine Tai acknowledged Pakistan’s contributions, especially in agricultural exports, and praised the exceptional quality of Pakistani mangoes. She also noted the potential for US beef exports to Pakistan, given the substantial demand in the local market.

Both sides agreed to continue discussions on issues of mutual interest, with a shared goal of strengthening their trade relations. This agreement not only signifies a step forward in economic collaboration but also reflects the commitment of both nations to work together for mutual benefit.

The upcoming TIFA meeting represents a pivotal moment for Pakistan and the US as they seek to deepen their economic ties. By focusing on sectors that promise growth and collaboration, both countries can pave the way for a prosperous future. As trade relations evolve, it will be interesting to see how these discussions translate into tangible benefits for both nations, ultimately enhancing the livelihoods of their citizens.
