Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently chaired a crucial meeting to address the future of the Pakistan Public Works Department (PWD) and the necessary steps for its closure. The meeting focused on dissolving the PWD, completing ongoing projects, exploring alternatives, and outsourcing construction and repair tasks to private companies.

During the meeting, it was decided that existing PWD projects would be finalized by relevant federal and provincial departments, with no new projects being assigned to the PWD. Construction and repair responsibilities will be outsourced to reputable private firms on an international scale. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed the importance of protecting the rights of PWD employees throughout the dissolution process and directed the formulation of a comprehensive plan for their well-being. He also urged for a prompt closure of the PWD, with personal supervision over the process.

To manage PWD's assets and transition to a digital system, an asset management company will be established. The meeting was attended by federal ministers Muhammad Aurangzeb, Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Ahsan Iqbal, and Ahad Khan Cheema, as well as Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Jehanzeb Khan and other relevant officials.

The decision to dissolve the PWD and implement alternative arrangements marks a significant shift in Pakistan's infrastructure management. By prioritizing the completion of existing projects, ensuring employee welfare, and modernizing asset management, the government aims to streamline operations and enhance efficiency in construction and repair works. This strategic move reflects a commitment to progress and innovation in the public works sector.
