PM Shehbaz announces a three-month electricity relief package to ease consumer burden during winter months.

In a significant move aimed at alleviating the financial burden on consumers during the winter months, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a three-month electricity relief package. This initiative is designed to encourage the use of electricity during the low-demand winter season, specifically for the months of December, January, and February. The announcement was made during an event honoring the renowned poet Allama Iqbal, coinciding with his birth anniversary.

Prime Minister Sharif detailed the package, stating that domestic consumers will benefit from a flat rate of Rs26.7 per unit. This new rate represents a substantial saving, ranging from Rs11.42 (30%) to Rs26 (50%) per unit, depending on the tariff slab. Industrial consumers are also set to gain, with potential savings of Rs5.72 to Rs15.05 per unit, translating to discounts of 18% to 37%. Commercial users will see savings between Rs13.46 and Rs22.71 per unit, with overall reductions for commercial consumers estimated at 34% to 47%.

The Power Division has confirmed these developments, stating that the reduced rates will be applicable to domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers from December 2024 until February 2025. This initiative aims to manage seasonal electricity demand while simultaneously driving economic growth. However, it is important to note that the new rates will only apply to 25% of units exceeding the reference benchmark, with all additional sales beyond this threshold charged at the existing government rates.

Moreover, industries that consume additional electricity beyond their historical benchmarks can avail themselves of discounts ranging from 18% to 37% on prevailing power rates. The government has emphasized its commitment to fostering increased industrial and commercial activity as a means to stimulate economic growth. Households, too, stand to benefit from the discounted rates for additional winter electricity consumption, making it a viable option for heating and other energy needs that would typically rely on gas.

This announcement comes on the heels of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) notifying a decrease of Rs1.28 per unit in electricity charges, attributed to adjustments in fuel prices in September. Earlier, NEPRA had approved an increase of Rs1.743 per unit in electricity rates across the country for the period from September to November, aimed at providing Rs43.23 billion in funds to ex-WAPDA distribution companies.

The three-month electricity relief package is a timely intervention that not only seeks to ease the financial strain on consumers during the colder months but also aims to stimulate economic activity across various sectors. As households and industries prepare for winter, this initiative could play a crucial role in ensuring that energy needs are met affordably, ultimately contributing to a more stable economic environment.
