PTI issues a 24-hour ultimatum for the recovery of Gandapur, condemning federal actions and boycotting parliament until resolution.
PESHAWAR: The political landscape in Pakistan has taken a dramatic turn as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has issued a stern 24-hour ultimatum to the federal government for the ‘recovery’ of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sardar Ali Amin Gandapur. This announcement was made during a press conference held by Asad Qaiser, a prominent member of PTI’s political committee and former Speaker of the National Assembly, alongside fellow MNAs Sher Ali Arbab and Shandana Gulzar.
The situation escalated following the alleged arrest of Gandapur, which PTI claims is unprecedented and unjust. Qaiser expressed strong disapproval of the federal government’s actions, particularly the raids conducted at the KP House in Islamabad, describing them as a blatant act of contempt towards Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He emphasized that such actions are not only disrespectful but also detrimental to the political process.
In light of these developments, PTI has decided to withdraw from the legislative process concerning proposed constitutional amendments. Qaiser stated, "We have decided to boycott all proceedings of the parliament, including standing committees, until this issue is resolved." He further criticized the federal government for what he termed as negative steps aimed at pushing through these amendments without proper dialogue.
PTI’s stance is clear: they are not seeking anarchy but rather advocating for human rights and political freedom. Qaiser articulated the party's position, saying, "What kind of justice is it when a political party is denied its right to protest, and even not allowed to hold public meetings?" This sentiment resonates with many PTI supporters, who have taken to the streets and the provincial assembly to voice their discontent.
During the assembly session, PTI workers rallied in support of their incarcerated leader, Imran Khan, chanting slogans and expressing their solidarity. The atmosphere was charged as party members, including Sohail Afridi, a special assistant to the Chief Minister, joined in the chants, further amplifying the party's message.
On the other hand, Dr. Ibadullah Khan, the leader of the opposition in the KP Assembly, attempted to quell rumors regarding Gandapur’s detainment, suggesting that the Chief Minister had left of his own accord and would return soon. He even promised to release a video showing Gandapur enjoying pastries, which he claimed would dispel any notions of wrongdoing.
This unfolding drama highlights the deepening rift between PTI and the federal government, raising questions about the future of political discourse in Pakistan. As the deadline approaches, the nation watches closely to see how the government will respond to PTI’s demands. Will they heed the call for Gandapur’s recovery, or will the situation escalate further, leading to widespread protests? Only time will tell.
The current political turmoil serves as a reminder of the fragile nature of democracy in Pakistan. The events surrounding the alleged arrest of Chief Minister Gandapur not only reflect the tensions within the political arena but also underscore the importance of dialogue and respect for political rights. As citizens, it is crucial to remain informed and engaged, as the outcomes of these political battles will undoubtedly shape the future of governance in the country.
