Iridium Communications Inc. and AATI achieve a breakthrough in UAS operations, securing FAA approval for BVLOS surveillance of critical infrastructure using Iridium's satellite connectivity.

Iridium Communications Inc. has reached a significant milestone in the realm of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) operations beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS). Partnering with American Aerospace Technologies, Inc. (AATI), Iridium secured a groundbreaking waiver from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct UAS surveillance of critical infrastructure for a multinational oil and gas company in the San Joaquin Valley. This achievement signals a potential breakthrough for the wider adoption of safe and scalable UAS operations within the National Airspace System (NAS).

Through the utilization of Iridium's global L-Band satellite connectivity, AATI's AiRanger is enabling remote aerial surveillance for an energy corporation's pipeline and production facilities. These drones, weighing over 200 lbs., make use of Iridium's low-latency network for reliable and cost-effective BVLOS connectivity, encompassing remote Command and Control (C2) and Detect and Avoid (DAA) capabilities. The incorporation of Blue Sky Network's SkyLink 7100 terminal on the aircraft ensures continuous tracking and C2 functionalities for aviation and UAV operations.

The Iridium Connected AiRanger stands out as the first UAS to showcase compliance with industry standards for the DAA system and meet FAA requirements for BVLOS operations. This accomplishment paves the way for companies to deploy BVLOS UAS efficiently, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and reducing inspection costs.

Iridium's partnership with the drone industry concentrates on guaranteeing safe separation using Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) avionics. The company's whitepaper tackles challenges in enabling the safe and efficient adoption of UAS in the NAS, underscoring the significance of maintaining safe separation between aircraft.

Iridium's global satellite communications network plays a pivotal role in connecting people, organizations, and assets worldwide in real time. The company's acquisition of Satelles and the introduction of the Iridium Satellite Time and Location service further bolster its offerings in the market.

The strides made by Iridium Communications Inc. in the field of UAS operations signify a significant leap forward in ensuring safe and effective aerial surveillance for critical infrastructure. With the successful demonstration of BVLOS capabilities and adherence to industry standards, Iridium's collaboration with AATI sets a new standard for the integration of UAS into the National Airspace System. This development not only enhances operational efficiency but also underscores the importance of safety and compliance in the evolving landscape of drone technology.
