Nintendo announces Switch 2 will be backward-compatible with original games, while revising sales projections for the current console.
Nintendo has recently made an exciting announcement regarding its upcoming gaming console, often referred to as the Switch 2. This new device, which has not yet been officially unveiled, will be backward-compatible with games from the original Nintendo Switch. This means that players will be able to enjoy their favorite titles from the previous console on the new system without any issues. Additionally, the Nintendo Switch Online service will also be available on this successor, allowing gamers to access online features and multiplayer options.
During a Corporate Management Policy Briefing, Nintendo's president, Shuntaro Furukawa, shared these details, shedding light on what fans can expect from the new console. Furukawa stated, "At today's Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch." This backward compatibility is a significant move, as it ensures that players will not have to abandon their existing game libraries when upgrading to the new system.
While the excitement builds, Nintendo has indicated that further information about the Switch 2, including its compatibility features, will be revealed at a later date. The company has previously mentioned that the official announcement of the new console is expected by the end of March 2025. Until then, fans are left eagerly anticipating more details.
In addition to the news about the Switch 2, Nintendo also provided updates on the sales performance of the current Switch console. The company has revised its sales projections for the financial year ending March 2025, reducing the expected sales from 13.5 million units to 12.5 million units. This adjustment comes in light of a 17% revenue drop and a staggering 69% profit drop compared to the same quarter last year. In the six months leading up to September 30, Nintendo sold 4.72 million Switch units, a decline from the 6.84 million units sold during the same period the previous year.
On the software front, Nintendo reported impressive sales figures for several popular titles. From April to September 2024, "The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom" sold 2.58 million copies, while "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" saw an increase of 2.31 million units sold. Other notable titles include "Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door" with 1.94 million copies and "Luigi's Mansion 2 HD" with 1.57 million copies sold. To put this into perspective, "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" has now sold an astonishing 64.27 million units, making it the best-selling game on the Switch, followed by "Animal Crossing: New Horizons" with 46.45 million units sold.
As the gaming community awaits the official announcement of the Switch 2, the backward compatibility feature is a promising sign for Nintendo fans. It not only allows players to continue enjoying their favorite games but also demonstrates Nintendo's commitment to providing a seamless gaming experience. With the gaming landscape constantly evolving, it will be interesting to see how the new console performs and what innovative features it will bring to the table. For now, gamers can look forward to the future while still enjoying the rich library of games available on the current Nintendo Switch.
