Wizards of the Coast addresses GenAI concerns in D&D and MTG

Wizards of the Coast has released a new FAQ addressing the use of generative AI (GenAI) in Dungeons & Dragons, acknowledging past mistakes and lack of transparency. The company's official D&D Beyond account shared a link to the FAQ, which aims to clarify how they handle concerns related to generative AI in art commissions for both Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.

The FAQ highlights instances where art used in marketing and game pieces faced public scrutiny for potential use of generative AI. Wizards of the Coast admits to errors in handling these situations and acknowledges misidentifying artists and their work. To address these issues, the company now requires all creative professionals working on their games to refrain from using GenAI tools.

In an effort to detect and deter the use of generative AI, Wizards of the Coast stated that they are actively evaluating resources for identifying such instances. They also explained their reasons for not always responding to fan claims about GenAI use in artwork, citing inconclusive internal investigations or private decisions to discontinue collaboration with artists who use GenAI.

This is not the first time Wizards of the Coast has faced backlash over GenAI use. In a previous incident, the company reaffirmed its anti-AI art stance after fans speculated about AI involvement in the artwork for Magic: The Gathering. Despite the controversy, Wizards of the Coast disclosed that they incorporated 'AI components' in the game's marketing artwork.
