Lahore: On Friday, dense fog significantly disrupted flight operations at various airports across Punjab, leading to a cascade of cancellations and delays. This weather phenomenon, common during the winter months, has once again highlighted the challenges faced by the aviation sector in Pakistan.

According to reports from aviation authorities, a total of 11 flights were canceled due to the poor visibility caused by the fog. Among the canceled flights were Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights PK340 and PK341, which were scheduled to travel from Karachi to Faisalabad, as well as flights PK322 and PK323 from Lahore to Quetta. Additionally, foreign airline flight SV739, which was arriving from Jeddah to Lahore, was also canceled.

Other notable cancellations included PIA flights PK281 and PK282 from Muscat to Sialkot, along with four flights from Islamabad to Gilgit, specifically PK601, PK602, PK605, and PK606. The situation was further complicated by diversions; for instance, flight QR616 from Doha to Multan was initially diverted to Islamabad but later returned to Multan once the weather conditions improved. Similarly, flight SV738 from Jeddah to Lahore and flight PK244 from Dammam to Sialkot were diverted to Islamabad and Lahore Airport, respectively.

In addition to the cancellations, a staggering 53 flights experienced delays. This included seven flights between Karachi and Islamabad, as well as five flights between Karachi and Lahore. Lahore Airport alone saw 19 flights delayed, with three flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi facing delays exceeding six hours.

The impact of such weather conditions on air travel is significant, not only for passengers but also for airlines and airport operations. Travelers are often left stranded, and the ripple effect can lead to further complications in scheduling and logistics. It is advisable for passengers to stay updated on their flight status and to plan accordingly, especially during the foggy season.

While fog is a natural occurrence, its effects on air travel can be quite disruptive. As we move forward, it is essential for both airlines and passengers to remain vigilant and prepared for such weather-related challenges. Understanding the potential for delays and cancellations can help mitigate frustration and ensure a smoother travel experience.
