Japanese stocks in Tokyo show positive turnaround as Bank of Japan hints at potential interest rate hikes, impacting different sectors.

Japanese stocks in Tokyo witnessed a positive turnaround on Thursday, with investors showing interest in value stocks amidst concerns over potential interest rate hikes affecting growth stocks. The Nikkei index climbed by 0.5% to 38,392.1, while the broader Topix index rose by 0.76% to 2727.05 during the midday break.

During the recent Bank of Japan policy meeting in April, board members expressed a more hawkish stance, hinting at a gradual rate hike. This shift in tone, stronger than previous communications, raised speculations about a possible earlier-than-expected interest rate increase.

With inflation trends nearing or surpassing the BOJ's 2% target, some members suggested a quicker pace of rate hikes. Consequently, Japan's 10-year bond yield surged to 0.91%, its highest level since April 26.

The Topix value share index outperformed growth stocks, rising by 0.79% compared to 0.73%. This shift was attributed to concerns about higher yields impacting growth stocks, especially in sectors like chip-making and technology.

While Tokyo Electron faced a slight decline, Omron saw a significant 11.69% surge due to strong profit forecasts. Financial group Orix also surged by 8.22% after announcing a share buyback. Conversely, SoftBank Group experienced a decline influenced by Arm Holdings' performance in the US market.

The rebound in Japanese stocks reflects investor sentiments amid speculations of interest rate hikes. The market dynamics highlight the impact of potential policy changes on different sectors, emphasizing the importance of monitoring economic indicators for investment decisions.
