China criticizes Taiwan's decision to raise travel alert level due to Beijing's legal guidelines targeting 'Taiwan independence' supporters. Tensions persist between the two entities over political differences.

China has urged Taiwanese citizens to visit the mainland without fear, criticizing Taiwan's decision to raise its travel alert level following Beijing's threats against advocates of independence.

The recent issuance of legal guidelines by Beijing, which include severe penalties such as the death penalty for individuals supporting Taiwanese independence, prompted Taiwan to caution its people against unnecessary trips to mainland China and Hong Kong, leading to an elevation of its travel warning to the second-highest level.

A Chinese spokesperson clarified that the new judicial directives are aimed at a small group of 'Taiwan independence' supporters involved in harmful activities, ensuring that the majority of Taiwanese engaged in cross-strait exchanges can visit or depart from mainland China without concerns.

China and Taiwan have been separated since the conclusion of the Chinese civil war in 1949, with China asserting Taiwan as part of its territory. Despite advocating for peaceful reunification, China has not ruled out the use of force to establish control over the island.

Since 2016, Beijing has limited high-level communications with Taipei, especially after Tsai Ing-wen from the Democratic Progressive Party assumed leadership. President Lai Ching-te, Tsai's successor, has been branded a dangerous separatist by Beijing.

The Chinese spokesperson accused Taiwan's authorities of spreading misinformation and inciting conflict and opposition. Many Taiwanese individuals travel to mainland China for purposes such as work, study, or business.

As tensions persist between China and Taiwan, the travel alert dispute highlights the complex relationship between the two entities. While China seeks to reassure Taiwanese visitors, Taiwan's concerns over Beijing's legal measures reflect the ongoing political differences. It remains crucial for both sides to engage in dialogue and diplomacy to address these issues and promote peaceful interactions.
