Chinese Swimmers Involved in Drug Scandal Before Tokyo Olympics

Recently, a drug scandal has surfaced involving 23 individuals, including three Chinese swimmers, just before the Tokyo Olympics. According to a report by The New York Times, two 2021 Olympic gold medallists and a current world record holder were among those who tested positive for clenbuterol in 2016 and 2017. The Chinese authorities defended the swimmers, claiming that they unknowingly consumed the banned substance through contaminated meat. Surprisingly, despite the positive tests, no disciplinary actions were taken against the athletes. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) disclosed that the levels of clenbuterol detected in the swimmers were below their minimum reporting threshold. Even though the international swimming governing body was informed about the cases, they opted not to intervene, accepting the contamination explanation provided by the Chinese authorities.

WADA's director general raised concerns about clenbuterol contamination in meat, pointing out several confirmed cases worldwide. The three swimmers were part of a larger group of elite athletes who had tested positive due to food contamination, with the source being traced back to tainted meat. The reasons behind the lack of public disclosure of these cases at the time remain unclear.
