The European Union has decided to uphold its restrictions on Pakistani airlines, including Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), citing ongoing safety concerns. This decision follows a comprehensive evaluation by the EU Air Safety Committee, which determined that there were insufficient grounds to alter the current list of banned air carriers operating within the EU, with a specific focus on airlines certified by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA).

An on-site assessment conducted in late November 2023 revealed several safety oversight issues within the PCAA, such as non-compliance with safety protocols and significant understaffing in the Flight Standards Directorate. Despite having technically skilled professionals, the authority struggled to ensure adherence to safety standards. In response, the PCAA presented a corrective plan in May 2024 to rectify the identified deficiencies, which was discussed during a hearing with the EU safety committee.

The EU Air Safety Committee stressed the importance of ongoing monitoring of safety developments in Pakistan through regular technical meetings in Brussels and progress reports from the PCAA. The committee also reserved the right to summon the PCAA for further hearings as needed, emphasizing the critical role of leadership stability within the authority for its effective operation.

The European Commission affirmed that, based on existing criteria, there are no grounds to revise the list of prohibited air carriers certified in Pakistan. EU member states were urged to prioritize ramp inspections of Pakistani carriers to ensure compliance with international safety standards. The commission maintained the option to take additional measures if safety risks arising from non-compliance were identified.

Despite these developments, a PCAA spokesperson refrained from commenting until an official statement from the EU was issued. Aviation experts expressed disappointment over the missed opportunity to resume PIA operations in European countries, viewing it as a setback for the government's investment endeavors.

The decision by the European Union to uphold restrictions on Pakistani airlines underscores the ongoing safety challenges faced by the aviation sector in Pakistan. While efforts are being made to address the identified deficiencies, the importance of stringent safety standards cannot be overstated. Continuous monitoring and collaboration between regulatory authorities are essential to ensure the safety of air travel for passengers and uphold international aviation standards.
