Israel has come under scrutiny by a global human rights group for allegedly deploying white phosphorus incendiary shells on residential buildings in southern Lebanon. This action has raised concerns about potential harm to civilians and possible violations of international law. While no burn injuries from white phosphorus have been confirmed in Lebanon, there are reports indicating potential respiratory damage.

White phosphorus is a highly controversial munition, with human rights advocates condemning its use in populated areas due to the severe burns and health risks it poses. Israel maintains that it uses white phosphorus only as a smokescreen and not to target civilians.

The human rights group's report includes interviews with affected residents and verified images of white phosphorus shells striking residential buildings in five Lebanese towns. The Lebanese Health Ministry has documented at least 173 cases of individuals requiring medical attention due to exposure to white phosphorus.

These incidents occurred in towns heavily impacted by ongoing conflict, with Israel also being accused of using white phosphorus in residential areas during clashes with Hezbollah and the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023.

In response to these allegations, the human rights group has called on the Lebanese government to allow the International Criminal Court to investigate and prosecute crimes committed in Lebanon since October 2023. The recent use of white phosphorus by Israel in Lebanon has raised significant concerns, especially with the high number of casualties on both sides of the border.

The use of white phosphorus in conflict zones remains a contentious issue, highlighting the importance of upholding international humanitarian law to protect civilian populations. The situation in Lebanon underscores the need for thorough investigations and accountability for any violations committed during armed conflicts.
