Riyadh hosts the International Falcon Breeders Auction, showcasing global participation and raising awareness for falconry heritage.
Riyadh is currently hosting a significant event in the world of falconry, as the renowned Spanish Cocero Falcons farm participates for the first time in the International Falcon Breeders Auction. This auction, organized by the Saudi Falcons Club, serves as a vital platform for falcon breeders to showcase their breeding methods, exchange knowledge, and share experiences. It also plays a crucial role in raising awareness about the importance of preserving falcons as a part of cultural heritage and promoting falconry as a traditional pastime.
The auction has seen impressive sales figures, exceeding SR18 million (approximately $4.8 million) over the past three years. This year, the event has attracted more than 35 farms from 16 different countries, highlighting its international appeal. The Spanish farm is displaying 26 falcons at the auction, which is being held in Malham, north of Riyadh, and will continue until August 24.
Nasser Al-Ajmi, the agent for the Spanish farm, emphasized the strong reputation of the Saudi Falcons Club. He noted that the club's commitment to supporting the falconry legacy and its effective event organization have encouraged many falconers and global farms to participate in this prestigious auction. This year has already marked a significant milestone with the sale of the world’s most expensive falcon—a gyrfalcon that was originally owned by the American Pacific Northwest Falcons farm—for an astonishing SR1.75 million.
The International Falcon Breeders Auction not only showcases the beauty and skill involved in falcon breeding but also fosters collaboration among producers and investors. As falconry continues to be a cherished tradition in many cultures, events like this play a vital role in ensuring that the art of falconry is preserved for future generations. The auction is an excellent opportunity for enthusiasts and newcomers alike to learn more about this fascinating hobby and the importance of falcons in our heritage.
