International Organization Leads Restoration of Ancient Caravanserai in Bamyan

An ancient caravanserai in Bamyan, boasting a rich 500-year history, is currently undergoing a meticulous restoration process led by an international organization. This significant restoration project, with a budget of $3.5 million, aims to breathe new life into the historical site situated at the southern entrance gate of Bamyan city. Originally constructed to cater to the needs of travelers, the sprawling caravanserai spans an impressive 450,000 square meters.

The head of Bamyan’s Information and Culture Department has affirmed that the restoration efforts will strictly adhere to the original design of the caravanserai. The substantial funds allocated for this project will ensure the utilization of authentic materials, thereby preserving the historical essence of this remarkable site. The restoration initiative is anticipated to reach completion within a span of three to four years, ultimately transforming the caravanserai into a vibrant tourism hub.

Recognizing the paramount importance of preserving historical landmarks like the caravanserai for the advancement of the tourism sector, a prominent university scholar has emphasized the significance of such endeavors. Moreover, the restoration work has not only been instrumental in safeguarding cultural heritage but has also created employment opportunities for approximately 80 workers, who are earning 400 afghani per day. These workers have expressed their gratitude for the fair wages, underscoring the positive impact on their livelihoods.

In a parallel effort to conserve historical sites, recent restoration activities were initiated in Zuhak city within Bamyan province last year. Furthermore, forthcoming plans are in motion to initiate construction projects aimed at preserving historical sites in the picturesque Kakrak valley in the near future.
